Practice makes Perfect

Safe Driving Training in Alhorn June 2010

On the 5th of June 2010 over a third of the drivers team have participated in this year safe driver training on the former air force base in Alhorn in bright sunshine. Over eight hours they were educated in theory and praxis by trainers of Mercedes-Benz.

The transport company Nickel located in Gelsenkirchen sent the official “Schalke 04” team coach to give the lift to the training ground, much to their chagrin of those who are not supporting this team. The comfortable coach compensated it very soon.

Different exercises were carried out with various vehicles; e.g. how to avoid an obstruction even with high speed, safe handling of vehicles, to break in case of unexpected situations while going through a curve or gaining back control of a breaking away vehicle. Particular attention was paid to safety kits like ESP (Electronic Stability Program) or ABA (Active Brake Assist), which a lot of Köppen trucks are equipped with.

The trainers from the Mercedes-Benz plant Wörth are training drivers partially for decades. They praised the Köppen crew for their ability. Most members took part in the driving training yet again.

“It was repeatedly rich in variety while gaining new experiences. My colleagues and me have drawn lessons from today” outlined Ralf Kliem, master driver of Köppen his impressions. “It is essential to apply what you have learned intuitively in dangerous situations. To exercise then would be far too late. For this it was brilliant that it was focused on practices, a sufficient number of trucks were available and these vehicles complied with those in our fleet.”

The day ended adequately with a small table at the inner harbor in Duisburg.

The action was part of a joint training program together with Packeisen Unternehmensgruppe.
